THE SECRET GARDEN & THE GIVING TREE

PROLOGUE

Kim Sang-yeoul's evocative "Secret Garden" series captures the mystery and subtlety of our most cherished memories.

Kim's delicately formed branches, leaves, and vines emerge from the shadows of our mind and fog of time, a bridge between the present and the past. His works at first appear to be photographic - a grainy and romantic black and white from the camera of a great master - but they are undoubtedly painterly. This illusion is an allusion to the imperfect process of memory... we remember but we embellish, we take out hazy recollections and create something familiar but something new. Kim's works have that comfortable familiarity but they also challenge us to look a little deeper, to reflect a little more on what in fact we are seeing. Indeed, we can easily lose ourselves in his canvases, wandering among the leaves ... in and out of their foggy embrace.

김상열 작가의 “Secret Garden" 연작은 우리들 가장 소중한 추억 속의 신비롭고 미묘한 부분을 연상시킵니다.

정교한 나뭇잎과 가지, 덩굴들은 우리 마음 속 그림자와 과거, 현재 사이의 오랜 시간을 표현하고 있습니다. 그의 작업은 처음에는 선명하지 못하고 거친 질감의 사진처럼 보이지만 마주볼수록 의심할 여지없이 작가 특유의 표현이 숨어있는 회화임을 알게 됩니다. 사진처럼 느껴지는 환상은 사실 우리가 가지고 있는 부정확한 기억들로 인해 생겨납니다.

우리는 경험적으로 알고 있는 불확실한 기억들을 조합하여, 새로운 것이지만 기억 속의 친숙한 무언가를 연상하려고 하기 때문입니다. 그래서 김상열의 작업은 처음 보는 순간 친숙하게 다가오면서도 화면속의 내용들을 좀 더 깊이 있게 관찰할수록 아름다움이 우러나오는 매력이 있습니다.

실제로 우리는 화면속의 나뭇잎과 안개 사이에 둘러싸여 우리 자신을 잃게 될 수도 있습니다. 천천히 호흡하듯 작품을 느긋하게 감상하면서, 이 전시를 통해 자신을 성찰하고 아름다운 자연과 교감하는 사이에 마음속 깊이 잊고 있던 추억을 만나기를 바랍니다.
